X - Ray

General X-ray

Our modern digital X-ray systems produce clear images while keeping radiation dose as low as reasonably achievable.

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray creates a two-dimensional picture of the inside of your body. It’s one of the most common tests requested by doctors and can be used to assess many areas, including the chest, spine, abdomen and limbs.

How long will it take?

Most general X-ray take around 10-15 minutes. Some studies may take a little longer depending on the body part being imaged.

Is X-ray safe?

X-rays use a small amount of ionising radiation. Our radiographers follow strict safety protocols to keep your exposure as low as reasonably possible, while still obtaining high-quality images your doctor can rely on. In most cases, the diagnostic benefit outweighs the small risk.

Pregnant or think you might be?
Please tell our team before your appointment and inform your doctor as well.

Do I need to prepare?

No special preparation is required. You may be asked to change into a gown and remove jewellery, watches or other metal objects that could interfere with the images.

What to bring

  • Your doctor’s referral
  • Your Medicare card (if applicable)
  • Any previous relevant imaging (films, reports or CDs), if you have them

After your X-ray

A specialist radiologist will review your images and send a report to your referring doctor. Your doctor will then discuss the results with you.
