CT scans play a vital role in modern medicine by producing cross-sectional images of the body, allowing healthcare providers to make informed diagnostic and treatment decisions with confidence.
What can CT help diagnose?
CT is commonly used to investigate injuries, pain, infections, kidney stones, lung and abdominal conditions, vascular disease and to plan or guide some procedures. Your doctor will decide if CT is the most appropriate test for your situation.
How long does it take?
Preparation
Preparation varies by the area being scanned. Our team will advise you when you book, but in general:
- You will be asked to change into a gown
- Leave jewellery and valuables at home where possible.
- If you’re having an abdominal or chest CT, you may be asked to fast for a short period and/or drink oral contrast.
Please follow any instructions provided to ensure the best images.
What happens during the scan?
You’ll lie on a table that moves through a doughnut-shaped scanner. It’s open at both ends and doesn’t cover your whole body. You’ll need to keep still; for some scans, brief breath-holds are required. Our radiographer can see and speak with you throughout.
Contrast dye (iodine)
Some CT scans need an intravenous iodine contrast to highlight blood vessels and organs. You will feel a warm sensation through the body extending to the pelvis giving a false urinating sensation and a metallic taste. This should last for a few seconds, this is normal and settles quickly. Very rarely, allergic reactions can occur; we screen for risk factors and manage any reactions promptly. Please tell us if you have kidney problems, are diabetic, or have had a previous contrast reaction.
Is CT safe?
CT uses a small amount of ionising radiation. We follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) and use modern dose-reduction techniques to keep exposure to a minimum, while ensuring clear diagnostic images. For most patients, the benefits of accurate diagnosis outweigh the small associated risks.
