MRI in Donnybrook

An MRI is a detailed scan that helps doctors see what’s happening inside your body. It’s commonly used to investigate pain, injuries, or ongoing symptoms when a clearer picture is needed.
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create highly detailed images of soft tissues, organs, joints and bones. The scan does not use radiation, which makes it suitable for many different types of examinations, including follow-up imaging when needed.

What is an MRI Scan?

An MRI scan produces clear, cross-sectional images of the body. It works by detecting natural signals from your body and turning them into detailed pictures that doctors can study. Because of the level of detail it provides, MRI is especially helpful for examining:
  • The brain and spinal cord
  • Joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons
  • The heart and blood vessels
  • Abdominal and pelvic organs
  • The neck and surrounding structures
When symptoms are difficult to explain or when other tests haven’t provided enough information, MRI often gives the clarity needed to guide the next step.

Why You Might Need an MRI

Your doctor may recommend an MRI if you’re experiencing:
  • Ongoing joint or muscle pain
  • Back or neck pain with tingling or numbness
  • Headaches or neurological symptoms
  • Sports injuries
  • Conditions that require monitoring over time
An MRI helps your doctor better understand what’s causing your symptoms so that treatment decisions can be made with confidence.

Before Your MRI

Preparing for an MRI is usually simple. In most cases, you can eat and drink normally unless you’re told otherwise when booking your appointment. Because the scanner uses a strong magnet, it’s important to let the team know if you:
  • Have a pacemaker or medical implant
  • Have had surgery involving metal
  • May be pregnant
  • Have kidney problems or have reacted to contrast before
You’ll be asked to remove jewellery, watches and any metal items before the scan. A gown will usually be provided for comfort. Sometimes a contrast injection is recommended to show certain areas more clearly. If this is needed, the team will explain everything beforehand and ensure it’s appropriate for you.

During the Scan

When you arrive, you’ll lie on a padded table that gently moves into the MRI machine. The scanner is open at both ends and designed to allow continuous monitoring throughout the exam.
The scan itself is painless. You will hear tapping or humming sounds while images are being taken, and ear protection is provided. The radiographer can see and speak with you at all times.
You’ll need to lie still so the images are clear. Most scans take between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the area being examined.

After the Scan

Once your MRI is complete, you can return to your normal routine straight away.
If contrast was used, you may be advised to drink a little extra water afterwards. Otherwise, no special recovery is needed.
A specialist radiologist carefully reviews your images and prepares a report for your referring doctor. Your doctor will then discuss the results with you and explain what happens next.

Your Comfort and Safety

MRI is a widely used and well-established imaging technique. It does not involve radiation, and every patient is carefully screened beforehand to ensure the scan is safe.
If you feel anxious about enclosed spaces, let the team know when booking your appointment. They will talk you through the process and make sure you feel supported throughout the experience.
